Rory's Swing Options

These timeless Playground Swings will provide hours of outdoor entertainment. They are easy to assemble and come with all hardware, chain, and heavy duty steel springs. They have been kid-tested and approved by the most discerning critics!

Our swings are so massive that they do not need to be secured to the ground. The only thing we recommend is that you add a few inches of gravel underneath each of the four post corners so that the posts won't settle into the ground.

Rory's Kid's Playground Swing is sized for children ages four to nine, while the rest of the swings can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. Rory's Big Playground Swing has 3" x 3" timber framing and a 2 3/4" x 5 1/2" main timber, while the beefier Rory's Grande Playground Swing is a few inched wider with 4" x 4" timber framing and a thicker main timber. The Big swing is rated for up to 500 total lbs for 2 swingers and the Grande is rated for up to 650 total lbs for large swingers! Updated Chain Hanging Hardware for a Better Swinging Experience

Instead of the static stainless steel eyebolts shown in most of the photos on the site, we now have a black painted steel structure that pivots with the swinging motion and, as is our custom, it is ridiculously overbuilt. We weld it in our shop using ¼ inch thick steel. All swing sets with a frame now ship with this new hardware. The springs ship with each set and create a soft and smooth motion (see photo at far left). The springs are easily added and removed depending on whether you like the softness it adds to the ride. All chain is stainless steel.

Tree Swings

If you have a big, beautiful tree from which you'd like to hang a swing, check out our Rory's Tree Swing option. This comes with all necessary hardware to attach a swing to your tree, including the seat, eyebolts, chain, and chain loops to go around the tree limb. We recommend you use an old garden hose to wrap around the tree limb. Slice it open lengthwise and place the chain in it. Don't wrap the chain tightly around the tree limb. Give the limb some growing room. Our standard length of chain is 10 ft, plus 3 ft for the loops. But let us know at checkout if you need more or less, and we'll be glad to send you exactly the length you need.

Money-Saving Options

There are at least three ways you can save on our playground swing seat kits:

1. You can buy our swing seats without the expensive stainless steel chain. All our Swing Seat chains are made of 100% stainless steel to avoid rust or stain issues. But, as a money saving option, you can buy the same size standard steel chain (1/4") at your local hardware store for a fraction of the cost of the stainless steel chain. Just order the seat alone ("seat & eye bolts only — no chain"), and your local hardware store can provide the chain and fasteners (clasps). When you wrap the chain around the limb of the tree or another existing structure, such as a porch swing frame or an arbor, use a piece of old garden hose sliced open to protect the tree (or beam) from the chain and the weight of the swinger. If you measure both the circumference of the limb and the length from the bottom of the limb to about 15" above the ground ahead of time, your friendly hardware man can cut all 4 sections of chain the exact length for you. If you choose to go with standard steel chain and fasteners, make sure to inspect them every few years for weather-related wear.
2. You can buy our playground swing seats without the stainless steel eyebolts. First, order the seat alone without eye bolts ("Seat Only — no eye bolts"). Then just go to your local hardware store and order a set of four 3/8" X 6" long standard steel eyebolts with washers and nuts for less than $10. The stainless ones will last longer, but they also are $45 now for a set of 4!
3. For additional savings, order the disk swing seat without the eyebolt and get some good quality manila rope at your local hardware store instead of eyebolts/chain altogether. 3/4" or thicker is ideal (easier to hold on to). Good rope is available in many hardware stores or online. Figure out the rope you want and then order the swing with the holes the same size as the rope diameter.

Steel Beam Reinforcement Option

Available for additional structural reinforcement for Rory's Giant 3-Person Swing is a 1/4" thick steel beam. It sits atop the entire length of the 6 x 6 main timber and wraps around both the front and rear for additional long-term structural strength. The steel beam is not needed for normal long-term use; it was developed for commercial installations, but has been ordered occasionally for private family applications where on-going rambunctious behavior is anticipated. The steel beam is primered and painted black (oil based paint) and comes with all the stainless steel bolts needed to firmly secure it to the main beam. Cost for the finished beam is $590, including shipping. Option is available during checkout.

Toddler/Small Kid's Swing Seat Option

You can upgrade to a Toddler/Small Kid's Swing Seat on the full swing sets (with frame) during checkout, as well purchase it separately. The upgrade option is $50 for one seat or $75 for two. The Toddler/Small Kid's Swing Seat is recommended for ages 6 months to 3 years old. It is 15 1/2"W x 13"D x 8 1/2"H to top of front safety bar and 9 3/4"H to top of backrest. The safety straps are included.

3" thick x 2' 2" long x 5 3/4" wide. The seat has a 22 1/2" wide seating capacity (inside the eyebolts or holes). Capacity is 400 lbs. However, ultimate weight bearing capacity will depend on what you use to attach the seat (e.g., rope, chain, etc.) and what you attach it to (e.g, a tree or beam). The hanging hardware is 4"L x 2 1/4"W x 2"H.

Some customers ask us about not having to touch the chain with their hands. If you don't want to touch the chain, the easiest solution is to order the seat without chain and instead buy high quality manila rope from your local hardware store or online. If you like the idea of using chain, you can slide a plastic sleeve over the chain (at least the bottom 2 feet or so which will be touched regularly). Any hardware store has plastic tubing that can be cut to slide the chain into. If you have a large diameter old garden hose, that will do the trick also.

Finish Options

Your furniture can be finished in one of five ways (select during checkout):

• Premium Sealant

  If you want to keep the natural wood tones with a translucent Alkyd oil based product. This finish will hold the surface color for an average of 4 years.

• Unfinished

  Lets you apply your own stain, or let the wood fade to a "weathered look" in a few months.

• Off-White Oil-Based Primer

  If you're going to paint in a light color. (We apply two coats.)

• Gray Oil-Based Primer

  If you're going to paint in a darker color. (We apply two coats.)

• Wax Finish

  If you plan to use your furniture indoors and would like to keep it looking great without sealant or paint.
