In collaboration with his colleagues, he <\/span>creates and preserves public greenspaces<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>honors local history<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span>promotes wellbeing for his fellow Ohioans<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This beautiful synergy is on full display at Middlegrounds Park, one of the sites he oversees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tucked along the Maumee River in downtown Toledo, Middlegrounds is a 28-acre greenspace enjoyed by runners, fishermen and women, dog owners, and cyclists. Red fox, squirrel, and deer sightings are common.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The park also offers stunning views of the Anthony Wayne Bridge, a local landmark. \u201cThe bridge is such a signature piece,\u201d Chris said during a recent phone interview. \u201cIn warmer weather, folks come out to take photos and paint.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A railroad roundhouse was once situated on the site. In keeping with Metroparks Toledo\u2019s synergistic approach, that history is reflected in the park\u2019s layout and structures, including the Forever Redwood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreverredwood.com\/fan-shaped-corner-pergola-kit.html\">Fan-Shaped Pergola<\/a> that Chris and his team installed in January 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack in the day, the roundhouse was where the railroad would bring the railcars and engines to spin and pivot for repair and adjustment,\u201d Chris explained. Initially the plaza\u2019s tables were shaded by umbrellas, but strong winds off the Maumee necessitated a sturdier shade solution. As luck would have it, the answer was close by.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA park manager had installed a Forever Redwood Fan Pergola at Swan Creek,\u201d Chris said, referring to another of Metroparks&#8217;s greenspaces. \u201cIt looked pretty sharp.\u201d As well, he thought the Fan Pergola\u2019s curved geometry would align with the roundhouse aesthetic of Middlegrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreverredwood.com\/fan-shaped-corner-pergola-kit.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2003 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foreverredwood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/swan.jpg\" alt=\"Forever Redwood Fan Pergola at Swan Creek. Photo courtesy of Metroparks Toledo.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a few email exchanges with Forever Redwood\u2019s design team, Chris embarked on what he described as one of the most fun and collaborative projects he\u2019s ever managed. Alongside the Metroparks planning and construction teams, he and his staff determined measurements for integrating the pergola with the curvature of the park. \u201cWe came up with the radius and angles and sent the original site drawings to Forever Redwood\u2019s design team. When asked why he chose Redwood, Chris laughed. \u201cI\u2019ll be honest. Each park manager wants their park to be the best. I saw the other Redwood pergola at Swan Creek and thought, \u2018I want this\u2014only better!\u2019\u201d In addition to being weather-resistant and durable, California Redwood is a gorgeous, warm-toned wood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the pergola was delivered, Chris and his crew braved the rough January weather to erect the structure. The finished pergola flowed with the park\u2019s existing lines perfectly. Chris was thrilled. \u201cThe park, the railroad, the bridge, it\u2019s all a large puzzle. We were fortunate enough to put the pieces in the right places. Every component,\u201d Chris said, reflecting on working with Forever Redwood and his own team. \u201cThe pergola fit like it was always supposed to be there.
