Attu Island Commemoration (Includes FR benches)
In 1943, American and Japanese forces fought for 20 days in Attu, Alaska. This U.S. Forest video conmemorates the sacrifices and shows the ceremony on the site overlooking the battle site that includes to Forever Redwood VA Benches built for the site. Seventy years after young men fought and died on remote, windswept Attu Island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) honored their sacrifices with the dedication of a new interpretive site to tell the story of WWII in the Aleutians. Captain William Pepper (U.S. Navy veteran) of the USFWS research vessel 'R/V Tiglax' with an honor guard of three other veterans from the ship's crew conducted the dedication ceremony in June, complete with taps played on a harmonica in the absence of a bugler.
