How Much Does a Redwood Pergola Cost?

By The Forever Redwood team, Pergola designers and builders · Reviewed November 6, 2026

Short answer. A handcrafted redwood pergola kit from Forever Redwood starts at $1,890 for a small garden pergola. A classic 12 x 12 ft pergola costs about $6,000 in Douglas-fir or $6,700 in California Redwood, and a large 20 x 24 ft pergola about $14,500. Design drawings and shipping in the Continental U.S. are included.

What a pergola price depends on

The price of a redwood pergola depends on four things: its size, the wood grade, the roof style and the options you add. Every Forever Redwood pergola is a made-to-order kit, so the configurator on each product page shows the exact price as you choose them.

To give you a realistic starting point, the prices below come straight from our configurator for the Traditional Wooden Garden Pergola, our classic freestanding design, with roof slats every 12 inches (the most popular spacing) and the standard post height.

How much more redwood costs

The wood grade sets both the look and the length of the warranty against decay. Moving up from Douglas-fir adds the following to the Traditional Pergola:

Wood gradeWarranty12 x 12 ft16 x 16 ft
Douglas-fir or Mosaic Douglas-fir10 yearsIncludedIncluded
California Redwood or Mosaic Redwood15 years+$720+$1,040
Mature Redwood or Mosaic Mature Redwood20 years+$1,260+$1,820

California Redwood is our most popular choice: for about 12% more than Douglas-fir, it adds five years of warranty and the warm color redwood is known for. Mosaic grades are made from 100% reclaimed wood at the same price. Some designs are also offered in Old-Growth Redwood, with warranties of up to 30 years. See our wood grades to compare them.

One detail to know: primer or paint finishes reduce the warranty period by half, so most customers choose our transparent premium sealant or a stain.

Other choices that change the price

  • Roof shade. Closer roof slats give more shade. On a 12 x 12 ft pergola, slats every 6 inches instead of 12 add $540.
  • Rain guard. A rain guard turns the pergola into a covered space; on a 12 x 12 ft pergola it adds $1,560.
  • Post height. The standard 9 to 9.5 ft posts are included; lower posts cost a little less and taller ones a little more, up to 16 ft.
  • Anchors. A 4-post anchor kit for concrete or wood decking costs $1,080 to $1,640, depending on the hardware and wind rating.
  • Details and extras. Decorative rafter end cuts, post trim, stains, ceiling fan bases, curtain rods and wiring trim are all optional and priced in the configurator.

The style matters too. A Small Garden Pergola Kit starts at $1,890, pergolas attached to the house from $2,530, the Cantilevered Pergola from $3,920 and the Solar Pergola, built to carry solar panels, from $4,480. If you want a solid roof, our pavilions start at $4,230 (see what a pavilion costs).

Cost per square foot, and how to save

Larger pergolas cost less per square foot of shade, because the posts and hardware are shared by more roof:

SizeAreaPrice per sq ft (Douglas-fir)
10 x 10 ft100 sq ft$48.60
12 x 12 ft144 sq ft$41.60
16 x 16 ft256 sq ft$33.75
20 x 24 ft480 sq ft$30.17

Ways to keep the total down without giving up quality:

  • Choose a Mosaic grade: it is 100% reclaimed wood at the same price as the matching grade.
  • Keep the transparent premium sealant, which is included; stains add $300 on a 12 x 12 ft pergola.
  • If the pergola goes against the house, an attached pergola starts lower: from $2,530, against $3,740 for the freestanding Traditional Pergola.
  • Put the kit together yourself or with a local contractor, following our assembly instructions.

What is included in the price

  • Design drawings at no cost. We email your first drawings within 3 business days and revisions within 2 days of your feedback. Nothing is built until you approve them.
  • Free shipping in the Continental U.S. Orders ship within 4 weeks of design approval. Large orders arrive on a truck with two drivers who unload by hand.
  • A complete kit. Pre-cut, finished timbers with the hardware and assembly instructions, plus a serial-numbered plaque so you can always reach us.
  • A decay warranty of 10 to 30 years, depending on the wood grade.

Costs to plan for besides the kit

  • Sales tax: added only to deliveries in California.
  • Assembly: you can put the kit together yourself or with a local contractor. We also offer assembly nationwide; ask us for a quote.
  • Footings or a slab: the pergola needs a level, solid surface to anchor to. Ask your contractor for this part.
  • Permits: rules depend on your city and the size of the structure. Check with your local building department before you order.
  • Shipping outside the Continental U.S.: we ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and most countries, quoted separately.

You can pay as your build progresses: a deposit starts your design, and each product page shows the deposit for the price of your order.
