The direction of the Roof Support Timbers (also known as lintels) can be either:

Lengthwise (Lintels parallel to length, Rafters parallel to width) or
Widthwise (Lintels parallel to width; Rafters parallel to length)

For maximum shade, it is best to have your Roof Rafters running North and South. This forces the sun to rise and set over the Rafters and gives the most morning and late afternoon shade – so if the long side (length) of your pergola best matches a north/south direction you would choose a Widthwise Roof Support option. However, sometimes this choice is not possible for aesthetic reasons. Please note you can also adjust the amount of shade through the spacing of the roof slats (closer spaced slats equals more shade) or by going with an alternative roof style that includes lattice panels (see Roof Style above or our other Pergola styles offered)

More technical details:
Forever Redwood Pergolas have three roof levels. Please refer to the example drawing above of an 18' L x 12' W Garden Pergola.  The lowest roof level is the Roof Support Timbers (also known as lintels). If you choose to have your Roof Support timbers Lengthwise (18') it makes the Rafters above it 12' and the roof slats above the Rafters 18'. But, if you choose to have your Roof Supports Widthwise (12'), the Rafters are then 18' and the Roof slats above it are 12'.
Roof support timbers (lintels) and rafters are 1 7/8" x 5 3/4". Roof slats are 1 3/4" x 1 3/4. If you prefer a different sizing or style, write what you would like in the comments section or contact us
