Unsurpassed Selection

Forever Redwood has over 300 different pergolas for most every budget. If you don't see the style you like, let us know what you have in mind and we'll build it for you. We offer complete design services to create your dream pergola at an affordable price.

  • 100% Hand Built: Forever Redwood Pergolas are 100% hand built one at a time by experienced craftsman. They are completely assembled in the shop and finely finished prior to shipping to be certain everything fits together perfectly.
  • Built to suit: Our standard design is a post and beam pergola. We also build arched pergolas and offer many options within these basic designs. For example, your pergola can be attached to an existing building or be free standing. We can also quickly put together a custom design of just about any shape to fit your needs.
  • 60 standard sizes plus custom sizing: Pergola pricing is based mostly on roof size and the grade of wood chosen. Pergolas are sized by roof length and width. If we don't list the exact size you'd like, just choose a similar size (in terms of roof square footage) and use the special instructions box at checkout to tell us anything we need to know.
    • For example, "I ordered a 15' x 15' pergola, but I'd like it 17' x 13' with the roof supports being 17'. Please call me if you have any questions." So, whether you are leaning towards an attached pergola or a stand-alone project in any style or size, we can help. If you don't see what you'd like, let us know and we'll custom design and build it with you via one or two brief phone calls/emails.

For more information on the process for custom designs, read our FAQ entry that addresses one customer's questions about this and his permitting process.

  • Finish options to meet your needs: All our pergolas are fully planed, pre-cut, routered and notched with all holes pre-drilled and every timber finely sanded. Most pergolas are finished with our Transparent Premium Sealant.
    • If you require a specific color or stain, we also offer a coffee-colored stain and oil-based primer options (if you are going to paint the kit). You can save money and order your kit unfinished (thoroughly sanded and left ready for whatever treatment you'd like to apply). If you'd like a custom stain, just let us know what it is and we'll order it and apply it for a nominal charge. Click here to read more about our finish options.

  • Rustic pole pergolas. Because we are a forestry company, we also can ship Redwood poles to allow you to craft a beautiful rustic structure. Click here for more on our pole pergolas.
  • Lattice privacy panels are available to add shade and intimacy.
    • The photos below shows a creative combination of a lattice roof and privacy panel with an off-white Sunbrella fabric mounted to the inside of the roof support timbers. If you'd like fabric for your pergola, please visit: www.outdoorfabriccentral.com and choose from the thousands of fabrics. You can either order it directly or incorporate fabric into your design and we'll order it and have our seamstress make it too fit the pergola.

Forever Redwood's privacy lattice panels are made from extra thick 5/16" by 1 3/4"W slats and the slats are spaced to create 1 3/4"W holes. The holes can be made larger or smaller to fit your needs at no extra cost. Each panel has a strong 2" thick frame that allows it to be built up to 48" H and bolted between the pergola posts up to 16' apart. At checkout, you have the option of adding up to 3 panels. If you'd like more than 3 panels, just make a note in the special instructions box.

Panels can be attached at any height. If you want the panels starting at a specific height, please make a note in the special instructions box at check out. If no height is specified, we'll ship your posts without installation holes. This way you can try alternate positions after the pergola is up and drill the holes when you decide on the exact height.

Lastly, at checkout, you have the option to choose whether you'd like the lattice going vertical-horizontal or diagonal (same cost).

  • Attached Pergolas are sometimes preferable because they use less posts and create immediate transition spaces from indoors to outdoors. But, each home is different and to be certain your pergola will attach without a hitch, we'll need to know the height of your eaves, whether there are windows, sliding doors or light fixtures that have to be considered, what type of siding/wall construction exists and what the ground is (undeveloped, wood, stone, concrete, etc.).
    • Custom 26 x 15 Attached Pergola - Mature Redwood Custom Metal Anchor for Attached Pergola

When we receive your attached pergola order, we'll email you asking for a couple photos of the install area. With the photos, we'll email (or call if you prefer)a few questions. We don't charge extra for this level of service and from your answers we will design and then make drawings of the pergola so we can both be sure everything will work prior to building. After many years, we've learned this attention to detail is the best way to be sure the pergola will work perfectly for you.

All the hardware for our Pergola kits is included except the anchoring hardware.

Standard Ledger Board or Custom Metal Anchors on Attached Pergolas: There are 2 ways to attach to an existing structure. The above photo shows our custom metal anchor method. Below is a photo of the ledger board method:

      Custom 22'L x 10'W Attached Pergola - Mature Redwood

Since we are not on site and don't know what will work best, we leave this delicate hardware decision up to the person doing the installation. If we do the installation for you, we usually use lag bolts on every other framing timber (32" on center in most cases).

Usually the anchoring to the house is determined by the house construction details. If it is necessary to have the roof support timbers attach directly to the siding, we will suggest the custom metal anchors, as shown in the photo above. If a ledger board along the siding can be used to hang or attach the rafters, then this method is commonly used (less expensive).

Attached pergolas are always custom jobs. In the photo below, the 24 ft pergola was built with only one post. It is shown here because the method of attaching is a hybrid combining 3 custom steel anchors attached to the siding using short ledger boards. The ledger boards are sized to bolt into at least 2 framing studs underneath the siding of the house for added strength while sized similarly to maintain aesthetic balance:

24-Foot Pergola with Custom Hybrid Attachment Method

  • Pergola Roof Options: Pergola roofs can be ordered in several ways.
    • The standard open roof is the most popular. It uses 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" roof slats spaced 18" apart on center (or slightly less depending on roof size so as to be equidistant from one another). The rafters below the slats are also spaced 18" on center or slightly less and run perpendicular to the slats. This spacing results in a balance between visibility and shade. You get excellent visibility and more shade from it than you normally would think due to the height of the timbers and because the sun is rarely directly overhead.
      • If you prefer more shade— you can increase the amount of rafters and/or roof slats to 12" apart on center or closer. Pricing is higher to cover the added timber involved. The least expensive route to add shading is to add roof slats and leave the rafters at 18 inch spacing. If you want more shading than the 12 inches on center, just contact us or make a note in the special instructions box when you order. Below are comparative drawings of the 3 most often built rafter and slat spacing options:

Drawing of 12-Inch Spacing of Pergola Roof Slats and Rafters - Top View Drawing of 12-Inch Spacing of Pergola Roof Slats and Rafters - Angle View

      • We usually recommend 18” on center spacing for rafters and slats initially. If you think you'll need more shade, usually bringing the slats in to 12 inches is sufficient. Rarely do you need to go to 12 inches also with the rafters. It is easy to underestimate the amount of shade the 18” on center spacing creates. If after installation you realize you prefer extra shade, you can add slats then. We keep your construction details filed, so you can add roof slats anytime to create the on-center spacing that will work best for you. Our design pros can help you calculate how many more slats you'd need based on the spacing you'd like to move to.
    • The Lattice Roof style creates the most shade and privacy. It's the lowest cost option to maximize shading. Lattice panels are overbuilt using 5/16" x 1 3/4" slats with 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" openings and 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" framing. Each panel is fastened in-between the rafters as shown below. Rafters are normally set at 24 inches on center when lattice panels are ordered.

Incredible Quality

  • Only Forever Redwood stands behind their pergolas with warranties of 30 years. Because of our quality and long warranties, The U.S. Forest Service along with many state and local parks use our pergolas. Just put them up and forget about them. They'll age gracefully and give you decades of trouble-free enjoyment.
  • 36% more wood. We use only oversized timbers for added strength and durability. Compare Forever Redwood's timber thickness to our competitors. Because we mill our own lumber in full-dimensions, our pergolas are overbuilt with much thicker timbers than what is available elsewhere. For example, ordinary 2x6's after drying and planing are 1 1/2" x 5 1/4" while our 2x6's are 1 7/8" x 5 3/4" (36% more lumber!).
  • 100% Notched timber design for superior wind and stress resistance. Every point where two Pergola timbers meet, we add a notch. No exceptions. Fully notched pergolas are longer-lasting structures with greater wind and structural resistance. Notching locks all timbers in place so your pergola will never sag, warp, twist, or shrink over the years. It insures your beautiful Forever Redwood pergola will keep its straight lines for decades. No notching or incomplete notching will inevitably lead to a degree of sagging, warping, shrinking, or twisting timbers over time.

There are hundreds of notches in the larger Forever Redwood pergolas. Notching is a labor intensive process because all notches must line up exactly. Notching adds beauty and creates a "web effect" that distributes wind and weight stresses throughout the structure. Because of the labor hours involved in notching, most manufacturers skimp on it partially or completely. Please visit our Photo Gallery to see high definition examples of the complete notching included with Forever Redwood Pergolas of all sizes and shapes.

  • Only stainless steel hardware is used. All assembly hardware is included in each kit. To avoid staining or corrosion issues we only use stainless steel.
  • Oversized custom anchoring for any application. Below left is a one post attached pergola photo— one example of custom steel anchors we have built to accommodate unique jobs. Below right is a photo of a 40 lb post anchor we custom designed for a U.S. Forest Service high elevation installation. The site has 80 mph winter storms and we had to get creative. Each post required only a 12 x 12 x 36 inch deep concrete pour to meet our in-house engineer's calculations:

Experience counts

We've been in business since 1995. We've shipped over 1000 pergola kits of all sizes and shapes. Most pergolas require some customization. We've done it for years and are happy to help make your project an uncomplicated success. Take a look at the many drawings and photo examples of past projects and let your imagination get carried away. Below is a drawing of a typical custom kit. It demonstrates the flexibility of the post and beam design. When the customer first contacted us, they planned a stand alone pergola. But, after a few back and forths, the design became a large partially attached pergola (only to the house pillars) with a small secondary pergola creating a lovely pathway. The possibilities are almost endless:

Pergolas 101

Read on for details on pergola roof levels, pergola part names, span limitations, post sizes, roof overhangs and other fascinating subjects.

  • Post and Beam pergolas roofs have 3 levels. The top level is the 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" roof slats (or lattice panels depending on your choice). Below the top level are the rafters and the lowest level is the double roof support timbers (lintels). Each level is perpendicular to the one above it with each joint notched. For example, the roof support timbers are notched into both sides of each post.
  • The standard roof goes out beyond the posts 12". This overhang can be adjusted to fit your needs. For the standard post and beam design, the maximum roof size for 2 posts is 20 feet in either direction and the maximum span is 18' 1” on center between posts. Structures over 20 feet in any direction are built with either an additional post to support sizes up to 40 feet or with larger timbers. For example, a 38' x 20' pergola will have 3 posts in the 38' direction (a total of 6 posts). We can go with larger timbers up to a 24 ft roof size using 2x10's instead of 2x6's.
  • Standard pergola posts ship 9-feet long. A 9-foot post attached at ground level will give you a "ceiling" clearance of 8' 4" with 7' 10" clearance under the roof support timbers (see drawing above for more detail). In some cases, you may decide to bury your posts and order 12 ft long posts. Over 90% of our pergolas ship with 9 ft posts, but if you need a different post height for any reason, contact us or make a note in the Special Instructions Box at checkout.
  • The support timbers create 5 1/2" less clearance when you walk underneath. You will be asked when ordering a rectangular shaped pergola whether you prefer your roof support timbers on the short length (widthwise) or the long length (lengthwise) of your pergola. In the above drawing, the support timbers are running lengthwise.
  • Forever Redwood Pergolas come in two size groups: Small Pergolas (under 100 square foot roof) and Large Pergolas (over 100 square foot roof). Small pergolas have 3 3/4" x 3 3/4" posts and 1 3/4" x 3 3/4" roof support timbers (lintels) and rafters. The large pergolas have 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" posts and 5 3/4" x 1 7/8" lintels and rafters. For the small pergolas, if you go with the standard 9 ft post at ground level, the ceiling is 8' 6" with 8' 2" clearance under the roof support timbers.

Anchoring Your Pergola

All pergolas posts should be attached to the ground.

  • All pergolas posts should be attached to the ground If your set will be attached to an existing deck/patio/concrete slab, you can use metal "Simpson Ties" anchors from the local hardware store. Or, purchase our anchoring kit, which includes everything you need: the metal anchors, lag bolts to attach the posts to the metal anchors, the anchor bolts to attach to the concrete, plus wood trim pieces and the deck screws to attach the trim to the base of the posts to cover the metal for a finished look. Click on the image at left for anchor kit photos and ordering instructions. When ordering an anchor kit, you'll be asked to let us know what you are attaching to. If attaching to a wood deck, we'll send lag bolts for wood. If attaching to concrete or stone, we'll anchor bolts (make selection at checkout).

If you are building over undeveloped ground, you can do it in one of two ways:

    1. Dig 30" deep x 8" diameter holes and add cardboard Sono tubing and some rebar. Pour concrete (in snow areas go below the frost line) and attach metal anchors at the top of the concrete pour. To keep the posts out of the weather, pour the concrete about two inches above ground level and, after drying, bolt the pergola posts to the tie. If you order the anchoring kit, the trim pieces will hide the metal ties at the base of the posts.

Anchoring Your Pergola - Step 1 Anchoring Your Pergola - Step 2 Anchoring Your Pergola - Step 3 Anchoring Your Pergola - Step 4 Anchoring Your Pergola - Step 5

    2. If you order your pergola in our Mature Redwood (20-year decay warranty) or Old-Growth Redwood (30-year decay warranty), you can order your posts 12"L and bury them directly in the ground with concrete and some rebar. This is structurally stronger than attaching at ground level, but placing pergola posts underground is not recommended if ordering in Redwood or the less decay resistant grades because they will decay in constant contact with the soil. The Mature and Old-Growth Redwood will be fine underground for decades. (Learn more about our wood grades.)

If you order the anchoring kit, you don't need anything from the hardware store if you are attaching to an existing deck. If building on undeveloped ground, just add the concrete and a bit of rebar.

Help Save Forests

Your purchase funds the restoration of 700 acres of N. California Redwood forests.

Forever Redwood is dedicated to restoring logged forestlands back to their ancient form. Restoration forestry works with the forest to grow large and old trees over time and maintain them in perpetuity. Forests of large trees sequester enormous quantities of carbon from the atmosphere. Consistently increasing and permanent carbon sequestration adds to climactic stability and global cooling. Also, allowing ancient trees to return to the forests in perpetuity helps reverse biological diversity declines by recreating old-growth habitat. It takes time, money and a lot of physical work, but dramatic changes occur in a relatively short time. Come visit and see what we've accomplished since 1995.

Your Forever Redwood furniture purchase funds the restoration work entirely. Thank you for your support. We hope to purchase and restore nearby forests in the coming years. Learn More »
